Fresh Energy applauds Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency’s plans to be 80% carbon-free in 2030

Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) announced on February 5, 2020, its plan to reshape its generation portfolio through the retirement of the Sherco 3 coal-fired power plant in 2020 and replace it primarily with wind and solar generation.

Saint Paul Follows Best Practice of Tracking Building Energy Usage

Saint Paul’s Climate Action Plan identified that 62 percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions come from building energy usage. We’re excited to see that the city is making moves to address this by considering more closely tracking energy usage in large buildings. We see as a first step toward addressing some of these emissions and ultimately reducing energy consumption.

A step toward workforce diversity

The transition to a clean energy economy will change Minnesota’s employment landscape—and Fresh Energy is committed to leveraging opportunities to increase equity and reduce disparities in the process. Legislative efforts on utility workforce diversity are an important first step. Learn more about this 2019 law, signed this week by Governor Walz.
