John Berns

Contract Lobbyist

John Berns is Fresh Energy’s contract lobbyist and brings decades of legislative and policy expertise to the Public Affairs team. John first got to know Fresh Energy in 2007 while he was a State Representative, serving on the conference committee for the landmark Next Generation Energy Act. As a legislator, John felt a compelling need for action to address climate change. John is fortunate to continue this advocacy as a contract lobbyist for Fresh Energy, starting in 2014.

Now as an attorney and lobbyist, John has continued that close collaboration with our team, providing key insights into the ever-changing politics and priorities in the Twin Cities and beyond.

John’s extensive experience includes work as: felony prosecutor, aide and attorney to Governor Tim Pawlenty, 2008 presidential campaign staff for Sen. John McCain, and Minnesota director for Duane Morris Government Strategies. John’s elected service includes the Wayzata City Council and Minnesota House of Representatives. John currently practices law at Carnival Berns P.A. in Wayzata. John also serves as a paid-on-call firefighter for the City of Wayzata
