Minnesota has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead from the North on clean aviation. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel and can be made from renewable sources like agricultural byproducts and green hydrogen. With bipartisan support, Minnesota is moving forward to create a SAF industry — but we need to urge Minnesotan leadership to create a clear framework to make it as climate-friendly as possible.
Minnesota-made SAF will lower emissions in air travel (which account for 10% of emissions from transportation in the U.S.!) and will drive economic growth, especially in rural communities with family-sustaining jobs and diversification for farmers, and help advance Minnesota’s decarbonized future. We must encourage the lowest-carbon solutions by ensuring state incentives benefit SAF production with the lowest carbon intensity scores. Last, we need a SAF framework to spur the strategic development of green hydrogen, which is critical to achieving climate-friendly SAF at scale.
