Energy News Network charts a new course with Canary Media

For nearly 15 years, Energy News Network (ENN) has been setting the pace for independent, industry-leading journalism within the clean energy sector. Launched in 2010 as Midwest Energy News, ENN has grown to cover much of the U.S. and in 2025 will join forces with Canary Media to expand its reach even further. Canary Media is an independent nonprofit news source with a similar mission to ENN of covering the clean energy transition.

“Fresh Energy has been proud to be home to the Energy News Network and the important energy reporting and energy-sector coverage that ENN has been leading since 2010,” said Brenda Cassellius, Executive Director, Fresh Energy. “I speak for Fresh Energy staff and our Board of Directors when I say that we are excited that ENN and Canary are teaming up to connect with an even bigger audience of people concerned about the climate crisis, potential change-makers, and climate leaders.”

Canary Media launched in the Spring of 2021 and has since become a leading outlet covering the clean energy transition across the U.S. By merging, Canary and ENN will continue shining a light on the stories that shape our clean energy future.

“The more we talked about it the more we realized that we would be a great team,” said ENN director Ken Paulman. “This is truly a case where we are creating something that is greater than the sum of its parts”

On February 1, 2025, the ENN team will join Canary Media, and the two sites will eventually be combined under Canary’s brand. Meanwhile, ENN’s five daily newsletters, along with Energy News Weekly, will continue to be published.

“It’s important for readers to understand that our journalism will not change. Our reporters will continue working their beats with the same urgency and integrity, making our presence in Minnesota and the Midwest even stronger going forward,” Paulman said.

Midwest Energy News goes back to the early days of RE-AMP, a network of Midwest nonprofits collaborating on cutting emissions. RE-AMP’s media center was housed at Fresh Energy and eventually Fresh Energy welcomed ENN to its team in 2014 after Re-AMP disbanded, enabling ENN to find a new home to grow, thrive, and emerge as the credible voice of energy news in Minnesota, the Midwest, and beyond.

Paulman began conversations with Canary in early 2023 and stated that the idea of combining forces was a new and exciting opportunity to merge two reputable news organizations into one powerhouse news outlet fueling the conversations necessary to be informed and take action on clean energy.

“When ENN was founded 15 years ago, clean energy topics and clean energy as a solution to climate change weren’t getting adequate coverage in the media, said Cassellius. “The landscape is different today and this is thanks in part to the herculean efforts of Ken and his team over the years. While ENN’s name may change, we know its mission to shine a light on energy decision-making and elevating diverse stories from around the country on the transition to clean energy, won’t change.”
