Right now, legislators in both the Minnesota House and Senate are moving forward with proposals to nearly triple the registration fee for electric vehicles from $75 to $200.
Fresh Energy and our partners are working to stop this unfair, unnecessary, and regressive fee hike on electric vehicle (EV) owners — and we need your voice!
Minnesotans are choosing EVs to save on fuel costs, reduce maintenance, and protect our climate. But this fee increase would make EV ownership less affordable and discourage people from making the switch — especially now when the EV market has more affordable used options than ever.
Will you take a moment to contact your state legislators and ask them to oppose this harmful increase?

Minnesotan EV drivers already contribute more to road maintenance than their gas-driving counterparts through higher tab fees and motor vehicle sales tax.
The real source of our transportation funding shortfall isn’t EVs; it’s inflation, increasing needs of maintaining our physical infrastructure, and declining gas tax revenues from increasing efficiency of gasoline vehicles.
EVs currently make up less than 1% of the vehicles on Minnesota’s roads. Punishing those driving EVs won’t fix the state’s funding gap, it will only slow down our progress on clean transportation.
Legislators should follow the recommendation of the Minnesota Department of Transportation to find a comprehensive, multi-faceted solution for funding all transportation infrastructure needs, including highways, while also achieving our state’s climate goals, regardless of the fuel or vehicle type.
Whether you’re an EV owner or supporter of clean transportation, now’s your chance to use your voice. Urge your legislators to oppose the fee hike and support a smarter, fairer approach to funding our transportation needs.
