Fresh Energy is hiring a full-time Digital Communications Associate to join our team. This position will assist in maintaining and iterating on Fresh Energy’s digital communications presence to advance Fresh Energy’s approachable policy, program, and fundraising-related work. We are looking for someone who is a strong writer, is detail-oriented, and has a deep interest in the ins and outs of digital communications

Senior Director, Communications and Engagement

Essential Responsibilities

Maintain Fresh Energy’s digital communications tools and channels including social media, website, action alert, email, and CRM systems to build on and expand the reach of Fresh Energy’s programmatic, policy, and fundraising work.

  • Assist with writing, editing, and implementing digital communications across online platforms to support and expand the reach of Fresh Energy’s strategic imperatives, programs, campaigns, events, and fundraising.
  • Ensure Fresh Energy’s website and communications tools meet industry best-practice standards and are secure and up to date.
  • Maintain and update Fresh Energy’s website and other digital assets, keeping programmatic, operational, campaign, and fundraising- and donor-specific pages and sites relevant and fresh by collaborating across teams to implement updates to the website.
  • Support general, campaign, fundraising, and programmatic email communications and e-newsletter creation.
  • Provide digital communications and logistics planning assistance and event support for online and in-person Fresh Energy events.
  • Write content for and maintain Fresh Energy social media accounts including creation of “social media toolkits” for partners.
  • Live tweet select events such as legislative meetings and hearings related to Fresh Energy’s clean energy and policy goals.
  • Assist in growing audience support and engagement by creating content, ads, SEO optimization, simple graphic images, and simple video editing.
  • Plan and implement paid digital ad campaigns.
  • Collaborate with communications, development, and public affairs staff on CRM maintenance.

Build, explore, and analyze Fresh Energy’s digital communications.

  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and trends in digital communications.
  • Research and support potential expansion into new social media platforms and digital communications.
  • Assist in tracking, analyzing, and reporting on communications and engagement via monthly cross-platform analytics and bi-annual reports of digital communications tools.
  • Analyze digital metrics to inform online reach and engagement strategies.
  • Create and maintain database of clean energy and climate media as well as major media outlets in Minnesota.
  • Track and document media mentions for Fresh Energy.

Participate in culture of collaboration and model our core values.

  • In collaboration with the development staff, participate in fund development and relationship-building efforts.

Other duties as assigned and in coordination between position holder and senior director, communications and engagement.

Job Qualifications

  • Experience creating digital content for the web or social media (written, photo, audio, video).
  • Strong understanding of social and website platforms, as well as digital ad tools (Meta, Google Ads and Analytics, WordPress, Hootsuite, etc.).
  • Strong technical aptitude including experience in WordPress or similar content management systems, Mailchimp or similar e-mail system, and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign and Photoshop a plus.
  • Experience with digging into online software and/or apps to problem solve and accomplish tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Basic SEO experience.
  • Video and photography production and editing skills a plus.
  • Able and willing to take ownership of responsibilities and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn new platforms.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting salary range ($40,000 – $49,600) based on experience with opportunity for compensation change based on demonstrable progress, equity across the organization, strategy, and overall organizational budget.
  • Full-time, exempt position, working 40 hours per week. We believe in caring for others at work and at home. Fresh Energy is committed to keeping the workload in alignment with the true hours worked and respecting the space needed to take personal time to care for your wellbeing and your family members.
  • 24 days of PTO (increases each year of employment), 15 paid holidays, and a flexible, family-friendly schedule.
  • We provide medical and dental plans, additional voluntary vision, short- and long-term disability, life, AD&D insurance, and 5 percent of annual salary contribution to your 403(b)-retirement plan from your first day at Fresh Energy. Fresh Energy will contribute a match of 1:1 up to 3% of your eligible gross salary should you decide to contribute to your plan.
  • In addition, we incentivize transit, biking, and walking, offering a dollar-for-dollar bus pass match, $1 for each trip to and from work by bike or walk, and an indoor bike storage area, as well as gym, and showers available for Fresh Energy staff as part of being a tenant of the Historic Hamm Building.
  • Generous parental leave after one-year of full-time employment. Eligible employees are entitled to up to twelve (12) weeks of unpaid leave under this policy. Fresh Energy will pay an eligible employee for the first six (6) weeks of leave with the rest of the leave being unpaid or being paid through the use of PTO. A full-time employee can carry-over the eligible 80 PTO hours each fiscal year plus up to an additional 80 hours of leave to cover the remaining 6-weeks that is not paid by Fresh Energy.
  • All our employees are fully vaccinated for COVID19, and we are testing a hybrid work-model. We update our in-person protocols to safeguard the health and safety for all employees when they want to use the office.

  • Fresh Energy’s internal policy considers, integrates, and adapts to staff experiences and needs in our workplace and lives. We are currently testing having Short Fridays where the office closes at noon every Friday.

Hiring Process and Timeline

  • We will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled; preference given to applicants submitting on or before September 21, 2022.
  • Our hiring team will select finalists for an initial 30-minute interview via video conference or over the phone in late September.
  • Finalists will be invited back for an approximately 60-minute second-round interview, also via video conference or phone. At that time we will ask for three references and two work samples relevant to this position, e.g. professional writing samples, or other relevant materials.
  • Ideally the selected candidate would begin work in late fall.
