In November 2018, Minnesotans will elect a new Governor as well as multiple leaders that will set the course for energy decision-making in the state for years to come. Throughout the election cycle, Fresh Energy is offering non-partisan education to all candidates for Governor and the state House of Representatives. Our work will help to ensure that whoever is elected to lead our state next will have detailed knowledge of:
- How Minnesota’s energy system works
- How policy impacts our energy system
- Opportunities to expand access to clean energy
Last summer and fall, as gubernatorial candidates were shaping their policy platforms, we reached out to all candidates and offered materials and training about Minnesota’s progress in the transition to clean energy. Many candidates participated in in-person trainings led by Fresh Energy staff and received comprehensive materials about energy policy in Minnesota. We were pleased to see energy mentioned in the communications materials of multiple candidates and we will continue our efforts to elevate energy as a top concern for our future Governor.
On the legislative front, our public affairs team traveled to five different communities this summer—St. Cloud, Grand Rapids, Owatonna, Oakdale, and St. Louis Park—and provided similar training to a mix of legislative incumbents and challengers from all parties. With more and more people engaging in the future of our energy and environment, Fresh Energy is here to provide practical solutions and help Minnesotans get involved in making change. In all, more than 50 candidates for state office participated in our energy-focused candidate education at some level.
As a nonprofit organization incorporated under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, Fresh Energy’s candidate education activities are completely nonpartisan. But that doesn’t mean organizations like ours don’t have a role to play. As energy policy experts, it is our job to help state and local officials understand how we can work together to:
- Clean up the electric sector
- Make everything more efficient
- Electrify more of the economy
- Expand equitable access to clean energy
We encourage citizens, businesses, and other local leaders to make their voices heard this election. Let your candidates know that a clean energy future is a top priority for you, and feel free to utilize any of our training materials (linked within and below) to help spread the word!
