SUMMARY:The IRA and You: Consumers\, decarbonization\, and the IRA
DESCRIPTION:The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is the largest investment in climate action in U.S. history that will result in 1 billion metric tons of annual emissions reductions by 2030. And the American consumer has a huge role to play. \n\n\n\nWhile the IRA impacts all aspects of decarbonization across industries\, it also incentivizes Americans with tax rebates and credits to end dependence on fossil fuels and take a bite out of personal carbon emissions—and save money while doing it. \n\n\n\nThis presentation recorded on October 27\, 2022\, aims to help participants connect the dots between the carbon emissions created where they live and how they travel and then dig into the many opportunities for consumers within the IRA. Because every household’s situation is so unique\, we are not able to give customized advice. However\, participants will walk away more informed about the consumer elements of the IRA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to learn more about the IRA as a whole? Check out our blog post or tune in to our August 17\, 2022\, episode of Decarbonize: The Clean Energy Podcast.

SUMMARY:Fresh Energy's 2022 Virtual Benefit Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:On the morning of Thursday\, October 13\, 2022\, nearly 400 people from across Minnesota and around the country attended Fresh Energy’s Seventh Annual (and third virtual!) Benefit Breakfast to take part in an inspiring conversation with featured speaker Julian Brave NoiseCat\, renowned writer and climate activist\, as well as special guest Ryan Panchadsaram\, engineer\, investor\, and co-author of the book Speed & Scale. \n\n\n\nThis year’s event emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnership as we strive for ambitious\, bold solutions that make meaningful change at the pace and scale required by the climate crisis. Our shared challenge—the challenge that is the North Star guiding all of Fresh Energy’s work—is solving the climate crisis through equitable clean energy policy solutions that benefit everyone in Minnesota and beyond. \n\n\n\nFresh Energy and all our Benefit Breakfast guests—a community of long-time and new Fresh Energy supporters\, friends\, partners\, and collaborators—joined us to recognize and honor the imperative of togetherness as we continue to face the climate crisis with equitable and bold clean energy solutions that help Minnesota and everyone who lives here end dependence on fossil fuel\, electrify their lives\, and build a healthy\, clean energy economy where all can thrive. \n\n\n\nHere are a few of our favorite highlights from the program: \n\n\n\nFresh Energy’s Joe Dammel\, managing director\, buildings\, and Mari Ojeda\, senior policy associate\, energy access and equity\, kicked off the morning with a crucial reminder about the heart and mission behind every facet of our work. \n\n\n\n“Fresh Energy’s determination to build a carbon-neutral economy that is just\, prosperous\, and resilient—a clean energy future that benefits everyone—is more critical than ever. Together\, we are shaping the course of history\,” said Joe Dammel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe debuted a fun\, new illustrated short video that talks about the seeds of policy change that our staff plant\, sow\, and help harvest here in Minnesota\, the Midwest\, and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur “Seeds of Policy” illustrated short walks you through the policy change that Fresh Energy staff drive across Minnesota and beyond. Check it out!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial guest Ryan Panchadsaram\, an engineer and investor focused on solving systemic societal challenges as well as co-author of Speed & Scale\, walked us through a blueprint for climate action. That blueprint included many of Fresh Energy’s program areas like electrifying transportation\, decarbonizing the grid\, cleaning up industry\, removing carbon\, and—most importantly—turning movements into action at the ballot box\, the boardroom\, and beyond through innovation and investment. \n\n\n\n“The work that happens in this room is so important\,” said Ryan. “…The follow-through happens here at the state and local level. The work is up to us.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFresh Energy donors Melissa Rappaport Schifman and Ellie Schifman\, Pam Moret\, and Ted Contag—founding partner of Parable Wealth Partners and Fresh Energy board member—shared about the connection between generosity and purpose and how giving back in a meaningful way is the key motivator of their support of Fresh Energy’s work creating a just\, prosperous\, carbon-neutral economy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJulian Brave NoiseCat\, journalist\, writer\, and activist for climate and Indigenous rights\, spoke about his Minnesota roots\, what we can learn from Indigenous peoples about how to achieve climate justice\, and how we all have opportunities—big and small—to do something about climate change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“One of the things I see in Native communities\,” Julian said\, “is the present and deep pain that stems from the near annihilation of our people\, our way of life\, the nearly complete theft of our land … this apocalyptic break from a world that\, not too long ago\, was ours. In that sort of post-apocalyptic state\, we have still found ways to love each other and be community together. We’ve retained and made great efforts to protect the land that we still have and the language\, the culture\, that we remember—and to bring it back\, to regenerate it.” \n\n\n\nHe continued\, “The parable of beauty and resilience in the face of apocalypse says a lot to the better side of our humanity when we face truly world-shattering challenges. I would say climate change is potentially one of those challenges. And\, in that\, I believe there are things to be learned from the Indigenous experience.” \n\n\n\nRead more about Julian and his work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe closed out our time together with another video showing Executive Director Michael Noble out and about on his e-bike to visit three friends of Fresh Energy—Shawntera Hardy\, Laura Bishop\, and Kristin Eggerling. We guarantee you’ll want to watch it through to the end! \n\n\n\n\n\nExecutive Director Michael Noble got his cardio in during this video\, riding his e-bike around to visit three long-time friends of Fresh Energy who have partnered with us to drive bold\, equitable change toward a clean energy economy. Watch it until the end!\n\n\n\nA special thank you to our event sponsors and table captains\, Breakfast Chair and Fresh Energy board member Eric Pasi\, and everyone who logged on to make this event a success! Together\, we raised $355\,030 (and counting!) to support an equitable clean energy future.   \n\n\n\nMissed the event\, want to relive your favorite parts\, or share the program with a friend? View the full Benefit Breakfast recording on our YouTube page\, or immediately below on this page! And you can still make a gift to support Fresh Energy’s work to speed the transition to an equitable carbon-neutral economy. \n\n\n\n\n\nWatch the full recording of our 2022 Virtual Benefit Breakfast! SUMMARY:Where does the water go? Stormwater management in the solar energy future
DESCRIPTION:Graphic/Fresh Energy.\n\n\n\nAre solar farms a threat to water quality\, or a community asset? How can we create a solar-friendly permitting process that also enhances water and ecosystem services for the host community? Join us on September 28 to find out! \n\n\n\nRegister here.\n\n\n\nA recording of the webinar will be emailed to all registrants after the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThanks to the PV-SMaRT project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Solar Energy Technology Office\, we are excited to debut the first solar-specific national study on stormwater dynamics and modeling. Project members include Great Plains Institute (GPI)\, DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)\, Fresh Energy\, and the University of Minnesota. \n\n\n\nThe team used field research on five existing ground-mounted photovoltaic (PV) solar sites across the United States\, three-dimensional hydrologic modeling\, and feedback from solar developers\, site managers\, state and local regulators\, and other stakeholders to assess the opportunities. And results are flooding in! \n\n\n\nBased on the project’s findings\, researchers have now developed a stormwater runoff calculator tool and best practices recommendations for local and state permit officials and solar industry practitioners. On Wednesday\, September 28\, join hosts Fresh Energy\, GPI\, and NREL and special guests for the inside scoop on how the tool has worked so far. \n\n\n\nMeet the speakers: \n\n\n\nBrian Ross\, GPIDr. David Mulla\, University of MinnesotaJames McCall\, NRELTodd Smith\, Minnesota Pollution Control AgencyRobert L. SUMMARY:How networked geothermal can help get Minnesota off fossil gas
DESCRIPTION:Networked geothermal for heating and cooling has been making waves recently among clean energy advocates\, researchers\, and utilities as the “next big thing” in the energy transition. On September 21\, the Energy We Can’t Afford Coalition and special guests from Minnesota to Massachusetts to dug into this new technology. \n\n\n\nGiven its potential for support across a wide range of stakeholders\, geothermal microgrids and district systems could play a key role in decarbonization of cold climates and provide an opportunity for larger scale implementation of geothermal by utilities. And the good news is that geothermal systems are already up and running right here in Minnesota! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the panelists: \n\n\n\nModerator: John Farrell\, Institute for Local Self-RelianceJoe Dammel\, Fresh EnergyZeyneb Magavi\, HEETAudrey Schulman\, HEET\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional resources: \n\n\n\nWhat’s up with networked geothermal? blog from Fresh Energy

SUMMARY:Summer Webinar Series: Energy + The Arts
DESCRIPTION:Energy and climate issues play out across our society—in books and film\, institutions of higher learning\, our democracy\, and in the very air we breathe. \n\n\n\nThis webinar was recorded on July 28\, 2022. \n\n\n\nEnergy + the Arts | From science fiction to popular Hollywood films\, energy and climate are part of the arts today. How accurate are these depictions\, and can they spur action?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the speakers!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNaomi Kritzer | she/her | Writer \n\n\n\nNaomi Kritzer has been writing science fiction and fantasy for over twenty years; her fiction has won the Hugo Award\, the Lodestar Award\, the Edgar Award\, and the Minnesota Book Award. Her newest book is Chaos on CatNet\, which is a sequel to Catfishing on CatNet\, and is set in Minneapolis. She lives in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, with her spouse\, two kids (when the college kid is home from college) and four cats. The number of cats is subject to change without notice. You can find Naomi online at naomikritzer.com or on Twitter as @naomikritzer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlga Tchepikova-Treon | she/her | University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities \n\n\n\nOlga Tchepikova-Treon is a doctoral candidate and graduate instructor in the UMN cultural studies department\, where she is writing a dissertation on disability aesthetics in alternative film cultures.
