Cities and counties reap millions from wind production

Since 2007, Minnesota counties, cities, and townships have been paid more than $42 million. Top earning counties include Mower and Murray, each earning more than $7 million followed by Lincoln and Jackson earning more than $4 million.

Two new 200-megawatt wind farms are scheduled to be completed in 2015—one in Cottonwood county and the second near Austin, Minnesota.

Minnesota began collecting a production tax for wind-powered generation in 2004 and a similar production tax for solar will begin in 2015. The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency has more details.
