It's finally summer...three months of warm weekend getaways and backyard barbeques. But there are 100 people in Washington who can't afford to take any time off. Our U.S. senators now have two comprehensive climate and energy bills in front of them: the American Power Act and the Carbon Limits and Energy for America's Renewal (CLEAR) Act. Both would create new American jobs, decrease our dependence on dirty oil, and cut global warming pollution through nationwide carbon emission limits. In addition, both bills would return a large portion of the revenue generated from making polluters pay for carbon to American families.
But neither bill will become law until two things happen: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and several Senate committees must agree to move on them. And there's no time to waste. It's imperative that action on a climate bill happens this year. As oil continues to spill into the Gulf and pollution from coal plants continues to warm our climate and dirty our air, the message is clear: it's time to move to clean energy. We can't afford to wait.
Send an email to Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid, urging him to work with Senate committee leaders and set firm dates to hear the bill this summer.
Tell him
- action on our climate problem is needed NOW,
- delaying the transition to clean energy will only magnify our energy problems later, and
- passing a comprehensive energy and climate bill this year - like the American Power Act or the CLEAR Act - is essential to increasing America's energy security, protecting the health of American families, and creating jobs for Americans.
