Minneapolis lowers parking requirements

On January 9, the Minneapolis City Council approved a significant overhaul of the city's parking requirements. The changes will make it easier for developers to build compact and mixed-use buildings that support walking, biking, and transit. These changes are an important step toward addressing global warming pollution because they will help reduce the need to drive in Minneapolis.

Included in the overhaul are several changes of note ( click here for the full staff report):

  • The city will now require bicycle parking for most developments
  • The city has slashed the minimum parking requirements for restaurants and larger commercial buildings
  • The city has implemented parking maximums for all uses to prevent the gross oversupply of parking
  • The city has eliminated minimum parking requirements for downtown commercial districts

The upcoming issue of Momentum (coming out on January 29) will include more detail on the importance of updating parking requirements.
