Last Friday, 22 U.S. Senators sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, urging the Senate to pass bipartisan and comprehensive clean energy legislation this year. The letter highlights the business and national security case for comprehensive climate legislation. "Our lack of a comprehensive clean energy policy hurts job creation and increases regulatory uncertainty throughout the economy," the senators wrote. "Businesses are waiting on clean signals from Congress before investing billions in energy, transportation, manufacturing, buildings and other sectors. America's competitiveness and export strength are also at stake."
This sentiment was recently echoed by Energy Secretary Steven Chu in article by the Wall Street Journal. "Right now there's a lot of money on the sidelines. Capital on hold means investments not being made, investments not being made means jobs not being created."
The regionally diverse group of signers on the letter contained senators from 16 states, including 5 in the Midwest and several important swing voters and new leaders coming to the table in support of comprehensive climate policy. We are proud to say that both Minnesota senators signed the letter.
Please take a moment to email your senators to say thank you for signing on and asking Senate Majority Leader Reid to help pass a comprehensive climate bill this year. Contacting your elected officials when they've followed through is just as important as asking them to support specific issues.
