I took action on Keystone XL. Will you?

No Keystone XLThis morning, I asked my friends and followers on Facebook to sign onto 350.org’s petition urging our senators to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. Some news outlets are reporting that Senate supporters of the project plan to attach it to the administration-backed and bipartisan highway funding bill.

You may have heard news reports that claim the Keystone XL pipeline is safe for the environment and will lower gas prices, create jobs, and help improve national security. While I don’t promote starting arguments on social media, I do like the no-nonsense responses to Keystone XL pipeline supporters in Grist’s article “Five ways to argue with a Keystone XL pipeline supporter.” It points out that increasing the local supply of gas doesn’t significantly impact gas prices, the project’s job creation has been wildly overstated, similar lines have leaks that can devastate our fresh water supply, and the list goes on and on.

Yesterday, 350.org had collected over 300,000 messages declaring support for Obama’s recent rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline. As I write, the number of messages has swelled to 600,000.

Will you take action to stop Keystone XL? Please tell your U.S. senators that Keystone XL has no place in a clean energy economy by signing the petition, talking about it on Twitter, and sharing it with your friends on Facebook. Learn more.
