Five reasons to join the #winterwalkoff this month

Winter WalkoffThis month, Bike Walk Twin Cities and the collaborators of Bike Walk Week are hosting a celebration of walking through a social media campaign called the Winter Walkoff. Minnesota residents are encouraged to walk somewhere (anywhere!) every day in February and tweet about it using the hashtag #winterwalkoff.

Why walk during the winter? Here are the top five reasons.

  1. It’s cheap. In fact, it’s the cheapest form of transportation out there—it’s free!
  2. It’s good for you. Walking improves your mood, can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and help manage weight and diabetes.
  3. It’s good for the environment. Walking cuts down on fossil fuel use and global warming pollution.
  4. It improves quality of life. According to walkinginfo.org, the level of walking in a community indicates its livability. Leaving the car at home fosters social interaction among neighbors, increasing safety and an overall sense of community.
  5. It’s fun. Need proof? This Saturday, February 11, get outside for the inaugural Winter Wonder Walk/Ride on the Midtown Greenway from 12:00 to 2:00PM, an event that will feature walking and bicycling activities. Join in various activities like biking and walking tours of the Greenway and reap the rewards of a marshmallow-roasting bicycle!
