Top five ways to walk safely this winter

walking in the winterWhile it may seem uncomfortable or intimidating to get out on foot during the middle of a cold snap, all it takes is a little planning and preparation. Here are some tips to keep you safe and warm while you’re walking this winter. (Find more at Bike Walk Twin Cities.)

  • Be cautious at the curb. Snow and ice often keep motorists from stopping completely at stop signs or slowing down for pedestrians. Before you step off the curb, make sure that approaching vehicles have come to a complete stop, or wave them through the intersection before you.
  • Choose your path wisely. If sidewalks are impassable and you have to walk in the street, walk against traffic and keep close to the curb.
  • Be prepared. Dress in layers and wear shoes with good traction. Even though we tend to wear dark colors in the winter, make sure you wear a brightly-colored scarf or hat so drivers can see you.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. There’s nothing like a nice winter walk with a soundtrack, but make sure your iPod doesn’t keep you from being aware of your surroundings or drown out sounds you need to hear to stay safe, such as traffic, dogs, and other pedestrians.
  • Take it up a notch. An investment in walking poles or snowshoes can make walking even easier (and even more fun!).
